Sunoikisis offers one Greek course and one Latin course every fall, beginning in September. This year, the Latin course will explore the literature of the Roman Empire through the works of authors who were active during the period beginning with the reign of Vespasian and extending to the death of M. Aurelius. These authors include Martial, Statius, Tacitus, Pliny the Younger, Juvenal, and Apuleius. Through topical approaches the course will help set the readings in the social, cultural, and political milieu in which it was produced.
Students will participate in a weekly online collaborative class session with students and faculty from nine institutions. These sessions will include live broadcast lectures by participating faculty, with live question and answer opportunities. This course also includes an on-line weekly discussion, which will be moderated by participating faculty. In addition, classes will meet at least twice weekly in on campus tutorials with home campus faculty for translation and discussion of the readings for the week. All components of this course have been devised to help students become familiar with current interpretative approaches to original material, to build facility in reading Latin, and to develop skills in various methods of communication.
